Projects and Exercises

Project 1: Social Network Size

Visit your social network presences on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and any other sites you belong to. Compare the number of friends/followers you have on these sites. If you don't belong to social networks, ask a friend. Is Facebook the largest number? On which site is your number of friends or followers growing fastest? Which social network do you spend the most time on?

Project 2: Facebook Marketing

Think of three brands whose products you use regularly and investigate their Facebook presences. Which of the three is most impressive? What types of marketing techniques do they use? Summarize your findings for each of the three brands and rank them using the following categories: activity, user involvement, informativeness, and overall feel.

Project 3: Advertising Your Website with Social Media

Come up with an idea for a new business that will sell a product or service on the Web and imagine that you have secured a domain name and established a website. Now it's time to advertise your products and services online. Find two websites that would be appropriate places for you to advertise and investigate the advertising options they provide. Then, create a plan to use social media to further promote your business. Come up with two social media promotions you might run to help get your business off the ground.

Project 4: Mobile Marketing

Find a free app for your smartphone that serves advertisements. Write down three advertisements you see and indicate whether you might ever be inclined to learn more about the products and services advertised. Why do you think those specific advertisements were shown to you? If you are uninterested in the ads, do you think these ads would be effective for others?
